dbe: The Year In Review & Picks Of 2011 Pt.1

Well what another bumper year it's been for us here at dbe HQ once again! Loughborough has truly outdone itself this year in times of recession, showing that even though times are tough, theres nothing like a good rave to help put smiles back on faces.

We started the New Year in 2011 with a night that surely went down in history as one of the most intense nights that the Union has ever seen! SHY FX absolutely blasted us all with a show of pure talent and legendary records which cemented him as one of the fore bearers of quality drum and bass! He smashed up Fusion with an amazing performance, but more importantly poured praise on our main man Pasquale as he warmed up for Shy with some insane records deep from his collection of classics! Even better was the fact that the queue was huge showing that people support quality music here in our old town! Samiad, Mike Mases and Wolverine all bought the energy too playing very very loud music!

March bought an event bigger in scale as we teamed up with the Mayhem gang with a three venue bonanza headlined by the Radio 1 legend Kissy Sell Out and dub step don Plastician! Staying true to our nature of providing a wide variety of music to the masses, we started off at The Orange Tree where a great variety of local bands shone brightly and we had the pleasure of hosting a certain drunken sailor for his first ever UK set! Following that the main man Plastician smashed up Rain Nightclub with a tough as nuts set for the true step massive supported by new blood C.R.S.T. And to add even more to that Echos nightclub played host to the eclectic sounds of Kissy Sell Out and our new favourite scratch maniac DJ Woody who played host to an insanely great visual show which was on everyones lips for a long time after! Another truly spectacular turnout!

The beginning of May saw us team up once again with our great friends in Notts, Detonate. We were told that we were hosting the Digital Soundboy room and boy were we excited! Once again we played host to Shy FX along with his label friends Breakage, Redlight, Donaeo, Yasmin, Youngman & B-Traits swell as garage LEGEND DJ EZ! That said legend absolutely smashed up the dance straight away as he reeled off tune after tune and really got the crowd going wild! After that it was an easy ride for the rest of the D.S. Crew as the people were in such high spirits! But no doubt they bought some quality vibes to the dance, Breakage and Redlight being our particular favs. However the strangest highlight of the night has to be coming back on the bus at gone 6am in the morning to texts of 'Osama is dead'. At first thoughts we couldn't believe it until it was confirmed. Sort of in shock we then rode into Loughborough which was actually ablaze in a fiery abyss. The combo of shocking events combined with the after-thrill of a crazy night was one of our most surreal moments of the year!

A few weeks after we managed to dust our raving socks off and put together another local rave this time in Echos nightclub. Similar to the Shy FX dbe it was a smaller gathering but by no means less hardcore, with scene star Jakwob headlining proceedings. Backing him up was an amazing new talent in XXXY who has now broken through to international fame thanks to his single 'Ordinary Things'. This was one to remember as both dudes bought great vibes respectively. Jakwob smashing up the dance with his blend of tough dub step and insane drops with poppier inflictions for the ladies, and XXXY playing some really up front music including many of his own swell as anthems such as Blawan's 'Getting Me Down' to a great crowd willing to take in fresh tunes!

Our end of term party was truly one of the best nights we have ever had the pleasure of putting on. Always bound to be a big turnout as Loughborough wraps up another academic year, this year was truly exceptional with many of our core audience finishing for good! So with a lot of emotion it was many peoples last dbe's, so we didn't want to disappoint! But with a HUGE lineup it wasn't hard to! With a main headliner the calibre of Beardyman, Room 1 was literally slamming all night long! Even when his equipment had a minor malfunction the man rocked it acapella and truly wowed the crowd! Backing him up was one of our favourite DJs Toddla T, who smashed it with some incredible music ranging from Dancehall to Electro to House to Funky. DJ Woody also returned for another Visual show which once again was an amazing performance. Upstairs Kito bought the vibes once more with a very very tasteful yet grimy performance. We really rate her here at dbe HQ and think she's gonna blow up next year! But the main talking point was who was gonna go B2B with Emalkay. Rumours had been spread up to the event but when no other than the man like Caspa got up on stage to a great reception, the two bought the room to an utter climax of dancing bodies.

After a short break we were back in October at our new home of Vice Versa! A great renewal of their club cemented our decision to start events there. The lights and decor is top quality and when we heard about the basement we got on the phone straight away to Sleazy Wonder and got him to host down there in the Wonderland! First up we had the two Radio 1 powerhouses Mistajam and duo Jaymo & Andy George. Both of them played some great records, Mistajam purveying quality music as exemplified on his radio show and Jaymo & Andy George surprising us with a great house set full of bangers such as Julio Bashmore's anthem 'Battle For Middle You'. Samiad and talented new resident Jake Twell got the crowd going once more and both are really gaining a local following now. And Sleazy's Wonderland supplied us with two vinyl only sets from Ian from Samiad and Yobema aka Sean Hulse, the former bringing an old school hip hop flavour, and the latter playing classic house and even Black's 'Wonderful Life' just showing how versatile the sounds are downstairs!

The month after we got straight back on it and bought you one of the finest Drum and Bass and more recently House DJs around in the form of the legend that is DJ ZINC! He really smashed up the place with an amazing set which starred out with his newest bangers with a bouncy feel and even started a new dance craze in the form of a buzzing 'Mosquito'! Backing him up was one of the freshest talents we've heard this year, Two Inch Punch. Not much was known about him prior to the event, but after hearing his set, jam packed with amazingly fresh music, we are certain he will blow up next year! His 'Love You Up' EP was a beautiful contrast to most of the stuff we've heard this year and talking to him after his production credits have been insanely varied and surprising and it was a pleasure hosting him for one of his first ever live sets! Downstairs we had our friends 25 Sessions who completely transformed the basement into a hive of visual seduction and live streaming pleasure!

Lastly and most recently who could forget our amazing 3rd birthday bash all but last week! It was truly a special occasion and it was great seeing a few friendly faces make it back for another great event. Headlining was man of the moment Joker, who truly bought a high octane performance full of tunes from his latest smash hit album which is getting played everywhere! The man epitomises dub step's rise to daytime airplay yet retains its exciting vision for the future whilst staying true to it's roots. Backing him up and topping off a versatile lineup once again was DMC champ JFB. He bought us some crazy tunes mixed in inimitable style and really bought some energy to proceedings! Downstairs was our craziest lineup yet epitomised by a killer last set by George Sammonds who went all out '08 style with a set split between throwback dub step mixed with wicked drum and bass!

But here at dbe HQ we want to look back with a retrospect of what really mattered, the music. Us head honchos have put our collective heads together and managed to get together 3 big names along with our residents to scratch out a short-list of our favourite tunes from this year and have tried to form a collection that says as much as it says for dbe and our manifesto as it does for electronic music. We hope its not a select-by-numbers kind of list but you never can please everyone so we hope you enjoy it regardless...

Our good friend and world famous drunken sailor Sleazy Wonder has supplied us here at dbe HQ with enough christmas cheer to make even strike berating loudmouth Jeremy Clarkson smile! Full of christmas classics, lesser known beauties and some pure bangers, the hour long mix is the soundtrack you need this month for when your putting up that tree, decorating the house or drinking egg nog for pre-drinks! We tried to contact Sleazy for a christmas message, but unfortunately his boat has run aground in the arctic tundra. Rumours of a secret team up with Santa Claus remain unconfirmed, but we did receive an engraved bauble through the post along with this mix and all it said was:

Man like Will Warr supplies us once again with a hefty video for our second party of the term. Some familiar faces in there smashing it up and we're thankful to you and of course to Will for keeping up appearances to an insane level this year!

WW: "Yet again, DBE smashed it with another incredible party laced with seriously hefty line up! Both DJ Zinc and Two Inch Punch tore apart Vice Versa with incredible sets, while downstairs 25 Sessions took over, streaming their sets online. An awesome night had by all, and great anticipation for the next party on December 13th (DBE’s 3rd Birthday) with Joker and JFB.

Happy with how the video turned out, it shows off what an incredible atmosphere the night generated. A few cheeky timelapses added in, and a lot of use of my monopod that allowed me to film from some crazy angles and get must steadier shots than in the last vid.

The start of a new mix series from our residents and friends, 'dbe presents...' brings you mixes which tell a story as-well as bringing you good records. First up we take a look at the evolution of Garage.

Around the early nineties Britain's clubbing scene was pretty much split into two scenes, the hiphop and r&b crowd and the house, garage and techno crowd. Whilst most people would have to go to a proper underground club to find real house music, mostly clubs around that time had a main room of commercial music often complemented by a smaller room playing funkier stuff, much like today.

This clear division of sounds started to amalgamate in the mid nineties after it became evident that producers had begun to experiment. Early prototypes of garage included two-step which was slower and used an entirely new beat and speed and bassline garage which was basically US garage or house speeded up in effect.

Most of the UK fought a constant battle with the London scene for particularly pushing underground music at that time. People thought that the speed that music was being pushed might cause brevity in a scene's timeline. In many ways they were right but without that constant will to push on, would there be any evolution? There are so many parallels to today's scene particularly with dubstep, but we like to look back upon the best parts of the past. This is the sound of pirate radio, music blasting out of modified cars and clubbing for three nights in a row. This is the evolution of UK Garage.

We are Very Very Very excited to announce that dbe will be an Official Clubbing Partner for Hideout Festival 2012!

In 2010 we teamed up with Bigger Than Barry & Ibiza Rocks to bring a week long clubbing holiday where experiences were had, and minds were lost... This ones set to be no different!

So onto 2012, and the mighty Hideout festival. Here's some info on Europes' newest Shindig,

INTRODUCING HIDEOUT 2012
Hideout Festival Croatia made its spectacular debut this summer – a beachside event in a stunning and unique location.
The first-time event was a complete sell-out and made an outstanding entrance onto the summer festival scene. Reviews from attendees, artists and clubbing partners were phenomenal and within days of Hideout 2011 having ended, talk of Hideout 2012 begun.
The wheels are currently being put in motion to bring you an exceptional Hideout 2012 and it is already set to be even more phenomenal than the last.

BIGGER
Due to extreme popularity and demand, capacity is being increased for next year’s event, so even more of you will be able to have the Hideout experience. A fourth venue has been added – in addition to Papaya, Aquarius 1 and Aquarius 2, which proved to be hugely successful venues last year, they’re now adding Kalypso into the mix.
Kalypso is Zcre beaches most infamous night club, right next to the sea and surrounded by palm trees, this exotic venue is going to add a brand new, exciting dimension to Hideout 2012!
To accommodate the extra capacity, as well as securing even more apartments in the town of Novaljia and surrounding areas – just down the road from the action and right near all the bars, pubs, restaurants and all-important beach – Hideout Festival will this time around offer the option to camp right next to the beach, with a stunning mountain back drop to the camp site.

BETTER
Some of your favourite DJ’s from last year will be returning – including Annie Mac, Nero and Jamie Jones who will both be playing back to back on the main stage – whilst some new huge acts will also be introduced. Absolute legends such as Ricardo Villalobos, Four Tet & Caribou, Claude Von Stroke, Skrillex, Skream and Jacques Lu Cont are going to be joining the line-up next year, ensuring an even more outstanding programme than before.
Clubbing partners Mono Cult, Jaunt, Urban Nerds, and Just Jack will be back, who were hugely popular last year, plus some all-new affiliations will be involved including Mulletover, Kubicle, London’s Fabric Live, Birmingham’s Face & Below and of course dbe...

Hideout Festival 2012 will take place across the four venues, from Friday 29th June to Sunday 1st July and will this time be hosting an entire week of events, from Tuesday 26th June right up until to the early hours of Monday 2nd July! For our second dbe party of the new term we continue with a true legend, supported with some fresh new talent making waves in the dance music scene. What better way to get your eardrums and mind in the loop than with an artist low-down of who'll be rocking the decks in a weeks time!

DJ ZINC

In 1996, Zinc launched the True Playaz label alongside jungle veterans Pascal and DJ Hype and continued to produce and release many jungle and drum & bass anthems on True Playaz, throughout the end of the 90s, making the label one of the biggest and most successful of the era. In 2000 Zinc produced the genre defying ’138 trek’ – which went on to chart in the UK and single handedly created a whole new genre, establishing him outside of his native dnb.

During this time he also released music under the moniker ‘Jammin’ and once again found the way into the hearts of ravers and record bags of DJs, way outside of his perceived home – drum and bass.

In 2001 Zinc launched ‘Bingo Beats’ his own imprint, releasing breakbeat and drum & bass from artists including Shy FX, Chase & Status and D.Kay. In 2005 Zinc was a featured lecturer in the Red Bull Music Academy, he has continued to work closely with the academy and the lecture where Zinc talks candidly about drum & bass, pirate radio and music’s evolving business models can be viewed here.

Testament to his remarkable achievements in British dance music, 2008 saw Zinc included in the ‘British Music Experience’ alongside the Beatles and Sex Pistols. The permanent exhibition in London’s 02 Arena, chronologically documents the major contributors to contemporary British music.

With the dawn of 2009 Zinc called an end to his hiatus on the dancefloor and began producing and DJing again, only this time producing and playing ‘house’, in the loosest sense of the term. 'Killa Sound', 'Let's Go' and 'Wile Out' all became massive hits in the club and on radio. Skream, Jamie George and JME aswell as Ms Dynamite all collaborated with him in the past few years, which is testament to his ability to evolve with the times aswell as stay fresh within the industry.

With his blatant disregard of genre blueprints (see 138 trek, ‘Faster’ et al) you can never be exactly sure what’s coming next. Therein lies half the charm, the other comes in his ability to continuously devastate dancefloors the world over.

TWO INCH PUNCH

From a legend, to a future star. When you read an act saying that they’re inspired by Beatles love songs, it’s hard to stop your heart from sinking. Expectations lowered by making comparisons to the fab four and Sam Cooke through a soundcloud biography, London’s Two Inch Punch then proceeds to blow you away with a series of tracks that he labels as being 'lovestep', feel more akin to the recent trend of J Dilla-a-likes that anything McCartney and Lennon may have penned.

Musicians, though, work in different ways, and this is clearly the work of someone working on a different plain to most mere mortals. Ridiculously, this project comes after writing and producing with Lil’ Wayne and playing guitar for forgotten popstress Little Boots amongst other bizarre credits. But these are pieces of music that don’t need a back story or a context to be appreciated, treading similar ground to Manchester’s Star Slinger or Sepalcure and managing that wonderful warm feeling of creating songs that utterly engulf you. The soundcloud crowd have, predictably, gone mad for it, with comments from the awestruck and envious being amassed at a rate of knots – expect big things.

His new release gives us five full-blooded R&B fusions for PMR (home to the recent L-Vis album and singles by Julio Bashmore and Javeon McCarthy). They've included the amazing 'Love You Up' with four brand new tracks. There's the Synth R&B drag of 'Up In Your Mix' and a tender solo piano 'Winterlude', plus the cloyingly chirpy 'Her Heart Moves' and the hyperreal James Blake soul of 'Forgive Me (For Messin' Up)'. Pure futurist boogie with a sense of heartbreak keeps you hooked and for us is definitely a tip for the future. Not so often we hear someone with pop sensibilities at the core gicing us tunes to get down to! Check his new release here, and peep some tunes below.

25 SESSIONS

As well as our trusty residents whom you should be familiar with already, we have our friends from Notts on hand to stream 'Sleazy's Wonderland' in the basement for us all night! With disco balls and free cola bottles aswell as crazy tunes last time, the chance to appear on camera might sway a few more of you to come down and join the magic, even if it is to take a break from the mania upstairs!

25 Sessions broadcasts weekly live streams showcasing upcoming bass music producers and DJs every Sunday from 6pm. We even popped by last Sunday to play some fresh stuff. One to check out amidst a whole bunch of Boiler Room type things, these guys are sticking true to their scene and really showcasing local talent. MASSIVE thanks to Will Warr for this amazing video from our launch party for this term. Many more to come hopefully.

"Two weeks ago, Loughborough based party people, DBE hosted their first event of the year, with Radio 1′s Mistajam and Jaymo & Andy George tearing up the decks. I was asked to produce a film of the night to capture the party vibe and help promote future events. This was a perfect opportunity for me to start producing creative media for the music scene.

This is the first time I have utilized all my equipment that i’ve been working with so far. I feel both the video overlays and the use of slow motion footage worked particularly well in this live music environment. This was the first opportunity I had to use my wide angle L series lens, which produced some crisp footage, and shot at f/2.8 meant i didn’t have to crank up the ISO too high.

For the next party, in two weeks time, Zinc and Two Inch Punch are taking to the decks. I’m hoping to build on what i’ve produced here, including some more creative production techniques; experimenting with time-lapses and new creative angles.

We caught up with Roska ahead of Sundays shindig, and asked him a few choice questions about his label RKS along with what's hot in the world of the bass music player...

Is RKS an extension of you as a dj or an output for you to put out music you find that you can't fit into your sets?

Following on from our fine review of Bestival this year, here's a new dbe mix inspired by Bestival's secret paradise 'The Ambient Forest'. We really have gone bonkers about it over the past few days but it's only now just sinking in what a highlight of the year it really was. God willing we'll be able to host a tent there next year! (Not a guarantee) But anyway, here's a blend of tunes that encapsulates what kind of sounds we heard in the forest over those few days, from ambient soundscapes, to relaxed breakbeats and even some good old 80s piano rock.

Bestival 2011: Crazy Days & Dreamy Nights

Bestival, the last festival of the season, situated in the picturesque Robin Hill Country Park on the Isle of Wight, was where many of the dbe crewdem (old and new) decided to regroup and see what Rob da Bank had to offer this year. Martyn Woollam casts a hazy mind back to review our favourite UK festival...

Thursday

The 5am wakeup call on the Thursday morning for few of us was very unwelcoming, but up we got, full of spirit, and made our way to the ferry port with perhaps the most overloaded car there...

After several hours (and many a cider) of putting up tents for our 20ish strong crew, we were settled and ready for a weekend of incredibly varied music and more than likely some outrageous shenanigans.

First up was a nice acoustic set from The La’s on the main stage to warm us up and get us into the real Bestival spirit.

Now fully ready for a parteh, we moved onto the incredible Red Bull Music Academy Stage – an excellent new addition to Bestival this year - which was really pumping out some decibels, as well as a great light show to match.

As we arrived at the stage it was Timo Garcia playing, but he was then to be outshone by firstly Braiden, who played a great mixture of electronica, both funky and futuristic. Following him was Thursday night’s headliner in our eyes – Pearson Sound, and he did not fail to please, with his set not failing to make the crowd move, with some tremendous bass driven music and some mindblowingly good 2-step.

Musically, there was very little else on the Thursday to see, so after a little walk around the rest of the site, many of us retired back to camp for a few more drinks...

Friday

Friday morning we all surfaced relatively early after very little sleep, feeling pretty sorry for ourselves. After a few cans, we decided to head in as it was lovely and sunny. First stop was the RBMA where we caught Andreya Triana; who’s beautiful voice soothing our delicate heads, finishing on Lost Where I Belong...

After this, we all headed over to the main stage to see Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, along with his tribute band perform his last ever UK gig... and what a show he put on, proving how many hits the band had. A fantastic sing along set full of happiness.

Following on from Brian Wilson, upstepped Public Enemy. Now if I’m honest, this isn’t really my bag, but they absolutely smashed it. Personal favourite being:

Following on from PE, we headed over to our first Big Top experience of the weekend for Breakage, with his new Live show. I sense that had this set been later in the evening it would have gone off, but due to it still being relatively early, it all seemed a bit much. This said, it was a great performance, and one that I’d like to see again.

Following on from Breakage, it was again over to the RBMA stage for what was my Friday highlight. The Numbers boys (AKA Jackmaster, Deadboy and Spencer) b2b Oneman, though Deadboy was nowhere to be seen. It was a set full of Hudson Mohawke and Rustie blends, and a set that really excited us of what is to come within electronic music. Biggest track was undoubtedly this banger from Rustie.

Since Bestival, this Rustie album really is one to look out for. Big big tings!!!!

After such a great set, it was time for a walk in the woods. An area where you can get lost in the maze, stumble around for hours, and always manage to find something new. At this point a very well known member of the dbe fam got told to “chill out and listen to the ambience” by none other than Rob da Bank himself after setting his sights on an empty pair of decks and requesting Spandau Ballet...

This was the last of it for most of us that night, and we all headed back to camp, chatted shit for a while, laughed at our mates in a state and tried to get our heads down...

Saturday

For those of you that have been Bestival, you will know that fancy dress is a huge part of the Saturday, with this year’s theme being Popstars, Rockstars and Divas. Within our ranks we had Kraftwerk (3 out of 4) ...

We had Abba..

And even Katy Perry(s), Lady Gaga, and Kylie...

Musically, the day provided us with lots of little gems, some expected, some not.

It seemed apt, that with everybody dressed up and looking ridiculous that the first port of call for the day was of course... The Village People. They reeled of their tracks with all the fun and frolics that you would think go along with such a band, and the obvious highlight being the YMCA. Watching a field of around 15,000 doing the actions really was a sight to behold.

A-Trak absolutely blew the Big Top to bits with an excellent mixture of electro and house new and old, combined with his incredible turntablist skills, really got lots of hyped ready for what sure to be another great day.

After another brief stint in the woods, it was time for David Rodigan...though many of us didn’t make it that far. A large part of us were sidetracked by the tiny Sunday Best Records tent, only holding around 10-15 people, which was playing a great selection of everything from Dan Le Sac to Fleetwood Mac. 2 hours after going in to see what was going on, we left. It is little things like this tent why we all love Bestival, as it is not solely about the music, just having good fun with great people.

After our musical mishap of missing Ramjam, it was back to RBMA to catch the end of Congo Natty, and sure enough he absolutely smashed it, plenty of softer Dub and Reggae, combined with lots of Jungle - a great performance overall.

Next up was Krafty Kuts, who of course completely smashed it. Meanwhile in the Big Top, Primal Scream were performing Screamadelica to a packed out tent, and The Cure held a huge crowd at the main stage.

After Krafty, it was over to the Bollywood tent to see Claude Von Stroke close out the Saturday night with a bang.

Just as he finished, the heavens opened, and it was a frantic dash back to the campsite to hide in our tents...

Sunday...a day that proved highly emotional, for all the right reasons.

We all woke on the Sunday slightly later than the rest, all with hazy memories of what had really happened in the past 24 hours, and our heads pounding. Though there was no time to be feeling sorry for ourselves, as Psychemagik were on nice and early. We headed down, and they definitely didn’t disappoint. In no time at all (thanks to a jug of Pimms or two, and some spirit filled Watermelons), we were once again all dancing like idiots, with massive grins on our drunk little faces as the sun was scorching outside. The set came to a brilliant, emotional end with none other than there remix of Fleetwood Macs “Everywhere”.

There was little else that we wanted to see for the next few hours, so we all spent the next few hours in the woods, chilling, having fun, and being general nuisances. Soaking up what would be our last day in our own little paradise.

But then... it was the time we had all been waiting for. The one, the only, Greg Wilson! The Rizlab stage blew us all away with its impeccable sound, but it was Gregs REELS OF STEEL show that took us on an emotional journey right from the start. Truly incredible.

After this, it was again back to the woods...this time not to get lost and be ridiculous, but to catch Tom Middleton playing an ambient set. This set was filled with what can only be described as ambient Drum n Bass and Dubstep, and was a great set, in magical surroundings.

Then it was off to the fireworks where many a “Happy Bestival Hug” was given out, with a soundtrack on Queen, Fleetwood Mac and Elton John.

For a few of us, that was enough and we went back to the tent, for a few others it was time to go and see Fatboy Slim, Paul Kalkbrenner and Derrick Carter, all of whom did not disappoint.

We all went to bed, whilst what seemed a mini storm was occurring outside, but happy at what a fucking great weekend we’d all had.

Same again next year. Peace out.

London TOMORROW Night!!!!

We're taking one big dbe roadtrip down to the city of dreams tomorrow to attend our 3 very close friends new night at NOMAD. Before & After is definately a night to keep your eye on, promising main events that promise genre cross-pollination and after-parties that make trainwrecks look like the lonely piece of chewing gum on the pavement outside.

Headlining the event is a UK Exclusive from the Visionquest badboys Igor and Vernon otherwise known as Ultrasone. Breath & Pop has been a dancefloor smash ever since it came out on Hot Creations and they've been known to span all areas of House in their hypnotic sets. Sure to be a massive crowd-pleaser you need to get on down yourself to witness some truly incredible music. Here's a little taster to get you in the mood.

But that's not all B4 have got for you. More familiar to you dbe heads, but by no means propping up the lineup is up and coming star Youandewan. He's made a name for himself with releases on Disfigured Dubs and Lo:Dubs and when it comes to breaking genre stereotypes he's well on point. Typical of the no rules aesthetic that is refreshing the scene at the moment, Youandewan is bound to put together a set that will leave you baffled yet dazzled.

Supporting these wonderful guests will also be globe-trotter Hamid who himself is making waves, DBE main-man Pasquale who is itching to get behind the decks and smash out a no-holds barred house set, those lovely boys Tru:Tek who always kill the competition with a strong mixture of contemporary sounds and Before family member Joseph Nelson who'll be keen to get the dancefloor smoking!

1. Damu - Ridin'

Keysound Recordings might be known for epitomising the darker sectors of London, but with this new release from one of the best newcomers we've heard for a while, Damu, the outlook is strictly bright and colourful. "Ridin'" argues a strong case for being the best proto-neon-hip-hop instrumental since "Wut". Hypergrime at the highest level, this is as focused as Damu gets as he pairs 808's with pops and synth magic culminating in one hell of a trip! The rest of the EP is just as dreamy and is sure to get tongues wagging about this new talent.

2. 2562 - Aquatic Family Affair (Extended Re-Cut)

From the psychedelic highs to the sub-depth lows now, 2562 has long been putting us under with his extraordinary arrangements. His new 12" takes a couple of cuts from his recently released ALL-disco-sampled album 'Fever'. What's remarkable is that whilst this experimentation could come off as a tad risky and clashing, it actually sounds like a natural progression from the producers previous work. Subtle flow is the game of the day here though and whilst quiet elements of said sampled material can be heard, it's his impeccable drum programming that really steals the show.

3. Marcel Dettmann - Translation One

Dettmann might not be a name synonymous with most of you dbe heads, but believe me the man deserves to be heard. The Berghain family and all they release is beggining to get real airplay from more closer to home artists such as Scuba, Instra:mental and Braiden, and 'Translation One' is a frantic introduction to the kind of Techno DJs play to get a PROPER dance going. The drive in this track is absolutely pulsating and almost tops the instant anthem status of any Blawan track, but this is proper Techno so who needs anthems...

4. Mosca - Done Me Wrong / Bax

PROPER DOUBLE A-SIDE MATERIAL RIGHT HERE!!! Those who aren't following Mosca like a religious prophet don't deserve to be reading this. Okay, we might be over-reacting but this release is going to and already has been getting NUFF PULL-UUUUPS. 'Done Me Wrong' is a pure late 90s Garage anthem bought right up to date thanks to Mosca's supreme production skills. And who needs a rewind when you've got one built right into the bloody record! 'Bax' though is the one that's been giving us proper itchy feet. An insistent rhythm and those spot on garage sound-bytes make this not just an homage to those who worshipped the rhythm back in the day, but a record that DJs will pull out the bag time and time again. You know what to do.

5. Joker - Here Come The Lights Ft. Silas

You can't really blame Joker for updating his sound. True his bangers back in the day were truly forward thinking, but let us just say that like Katy B, Magnetic Man et al. we push forward to let the underground continue. And yeah even though we've got vocals and pop sensibilities in this track, Joker does it so so well. Probably bound for daytime radio airplay, 'Here Come The Lights' should be seen as another beacon for Dubstep of the future along with those big names who really deserve it. Oh yeah, and he definitely smashed up the dance at Dub-Boro a while ago so we love him innit.

London crew! Where you at! dbe and our friends at Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes have organised another London parteh for all our fam down in the big smoke on Friday 12th August!

Manning the ones and twos is the main man Pasquale. If you dont know by now then we'll tell you that our boy has literally played with everyone whilst running dbe, the list would be too long for us to even attempt. When Shy FX played for us in March he tweeted straight after that Pasq was the best DJ he had seen in a long time. Last time we came to London over 400 people braved a literal blizzard to see us…and this time around the weather is sure to be grand, so no excuse! For the free party Pasq has promised to bring a party mix, as well as his usual house and bass music sound he will be playing an eclectic mash up of disco, funk, hip hop, 80’s and basically whatever he's feeling from the vibe!

Supporting Pasquale we have the party sailor himself Sleazy Wonder (AKA SK). When he’s not busy smuggling fish across the Atlantic this guy is a party starter extraordinaire. Aside from providing the disco edge to the dbe nights he recently decided to break into a closed room of a club in Leeds, start DJing and soon had more people watching him then Lindstrom!!! Sharing a similar love of multi dance floor orientated genres like Pasquale the crowd will of course be moving with Sleazy on the controls. Check out some mixes from both these guys at:

So the dust has settled for now on another crazy year for the dbe boys, and whilst most of our faithful family have graduated now and are getting prepared for the real world, there are still plenty of brand new boys and girls wanting to parteh hard in the boro. Plans for next year may still not yet be concrete but one's thing for sure, we here at dbe HQ are gonna make the most of this Summer break and attend as many nights and festivals we can squeeze into our busy schedule. But we're always busy selecting and seeking out the best records we can in order to keep you ticking over with something fresh before the next event! So we've picked 5 of our favourite records that are officially out TODAY! Make sure you seek them out on boomkat or juno though after listening so you can get your hands on some high quality business! Let's go!

1. Jamie xx - Far Nearer

This long awaited dubplate has finally seen the light of day along with a b-side on the fantastic numbers label. Steel drums are the distinctive component of 'Far Nearer' and the record has been around since last summer, but release might have been put off another year in order to soundtrack sunny sessions this time around. It's melancholic, joyful and undoubtedly appealing to anyone lucky enough to be drawn in to its wide cast net.

2. Von D - You're The One Ft. Phephe

Von D releases his 'Daydreaming' album today and it features a number of his idiosyncratic jazzy dubstep workouts on, aswell as a few left turns and even a bassline track! The highlight of the contrasting styles featured on the album though is this dainty piano led track featuring regular collaborator and vocalist Phephe. Almost a step above 'Show Me' in terms of arrangement, the track again is bound to be played to death during the incoming Summer months aswell as by us here at dbe HQ!

3. Holy Other - Touch

Something a little deeper now on the great Triangle label. These guys keep coming up with the goods and new boy Holy Other has just released an incredibly strong debut 5-track release featuring ghostly and atmospheric percussive jams. 'Touch' has got those James Blake type pitched vocals sparring with some deeep synth sounds and bass, but comes across more in touch with Burial or even Lil B beatmaker Clams Casino (check him out). A proper jam, this ones not for the faint of heart.

4. Synkro & Indigo - Guidance

Exit records is back! It's been time since we've heard some touching Drum n Bass music and we've come across two in one week! Aswell as the new Bop record on Hospital records, we were torn between that and this release, Synkro & Indigo are bringing back the love to half step. Another atmospheric aura surrounds 'Guidance' but the mood is more hopeful and outward reaching as if it's calling out to be heard. A heart-wrenching vocal is again cut up to masterful effect and the instrumentation is on another level. One for the sunset.

5. Fatima - Red Light

Floating Points and the Eglo fam are some of the hippest cats around. They don't often release alot, but when they do its all ridiculously good stuff and always what you wouldn't expect. Fatima manages to steer clear of another funk-jam record and is strictly on soul-diva form here, something that suits her voice perfectly. Along with FP's unparalleled instrumentation and synth work, the two interplay perfectly here, Fatima's tones riding the waves of rising synths and bumping percussion. This one's already a classic in our book, and probably not bound to become world-renowned, we're sure people will be coming back to this one for years to come. Joyous.

Not only did we dance around on stage getting a little too intoxicated at the Indoor Festival this month, we also made a good few friends, including none other than TRAP MAGAZINE who co-hosted/joined in with the antics in Rescue Rooms. Their publication is one of the freshest we have seen in a long time, and rolls in with a lot of the style & finesse that Mixmag abandoned ages ago in their pursuit of glorifying drugs & trance. And what's more, its free!

This months issue includes a great little interview with upcoming dbe 'Summer Party' guest Emalkay, a piece on the demigod David Rodigan, alongside some great regular features including 'boss selections'. We will hopefully have some paper copies to distribute at our next event, but for now, have a feast on this months issue online...

Hypnotic Syncopations - Three Eroded Tracks

Whilst clubs across Britain pulsate with records either permeating a heavy, bass-drenched atmosphere and dance sensibility, or more than often a commercial edge, the underground caverns consistently home the difficult and more unidentifiable music that struggles to gain recognition above ground or more than often is praised but never quite fits in with the ‘bass continuum’ that Britain is experiencing at the moment. A number of clubs across the rest of Europe though are housing and experimenting with this kind of music. Whether it be in Berlin or across other urban dystopias that the music so often relates to, the sound is musically affecting and oozes more emotion than a lot of the structurally rigid dance music heard in clubs across our country. Dbe looks at three acts and tracks in particular that we think sum up this statement. Listeners of a nervous disposition turn away now.

rising saudade by downliners sekt

Lurching once again from a pressurized plain, Downliners Sekt continue to confound and confuse lax listeners with their final edition into broken electronic soul music. Having revealed shattered emotion within warped and crunchy beats on their last EP, the new record ‘Meet The Decline’ strips back the arrangements even more and delights in a technological apocalypse. Last featured here on dbe 3’s the vibe remains hypnotic and ghostly, and whilst there are often shades of menace lurking beneath the subbass, in equal measure there are uplifting moments carried on a sweeping movement of percussion. An aural comparison would be being trapped in a vacuum in slow motion and often the music does sweep you away.

"Rising Saudade" in particular remains indefinable and the particular musical intricacies that swell through its length unidentifiable. There is a sense of heartbreak, but in particular the feeling of loss as sounds, like moments, fall away. As the drum patterns climax near the end, it is not an unwelcome raucous, instead it feels like the track was going to break down all along. Even whilst wallowing in depression, underlying it all is a sense of beauty. The EP title ‘Meet The Decline’ seems appropriate, it’s the sound of someone falling right to the bottom, and once they are at the bottom, the only way to look is up.

Intermittent by modernlove

Whilst his last release came under his Andrea moniker, Andy Stott’s new release sees him dropping the tempo down from 160bpm juke to 110bpm slow house. ‘Passed Me By’ sounds just as unnerving and lonely as the Downliners Sekt.’s work, but often emotion is cast aside in favour of much more cavernous and spacious sounds. The slowly plodding tracks which make up the EP are slightly removed from the dub-techno he is traditionally known for and results sound like Actress sparring with Instra:Mental at the bottom of a cavern.

‘Intermittent’ however is the wildcard on the EP. Snares cut up the track yet remain parallel to the bass kicks. Along with the disco samples bombarding and reverberating against the main structure, the record maintains a strange fascination. Some people have termed it ‘death disco’ and whilst that seems abit too far, it does sort of encapsulate what is happening. Towards the end of the track however is where the magic happens. The sample is allowed to come to the fore and the real influence behind the track is revealed. A brief snippet of a 90bpm R’N’B or funk track rolls out and concludes the slow journey just taken. It’s a surprising moment on an EP full of dark twists and turns.

Flying Lotus - Endless White by virtual programming

A while back now, Flying Lotus crafted two minimalist soundscapes for his series of LA EPs. Totally modern and ambient, the two tracks perfectly encapsulate the dreamlike states of euphoria. Although beatless, there is a sense of being carried by invisible rhythm within ‘Endless White’. While only a relatively short track, when fully immersed in it, the listener can often feel it is truly ‘endless’. The soft chords that flow throughout the track seemingly do not change, but there are in fact subtle changes and light flourishes which unknowingly changes the dynamics of different parts of it.

Known for his beatscapes and hip hop experiments, Flying Lotus is now often experimenting with ambient soundscapes. His latest being a collaboration at the end of Kode9’s latest album. His interest in dystopian landscapes and eerie sci-fi movie soundtracks as well as his jazz background is now taking over from his hip hop past and we’ll probably soon see a crossover point where all of these artists merge or collaborate in the future.

After an Easter break that has stirred those summer vibes inside dbe, we couldn't help but get carried away and make sure that the summer feeling carries on through the night this term. And what better way to keep things fresh and continue those vibes to the early hours than our old friend JAKWOB & LE11 debutant XXXY.

After he named the final 'dub-boro' party in June as one of his favourite parties of the year, the feeling was mutual and we couldn't wait to get him back to grace the decks in Loughborough yet again... JAKWOB rolls back into town bringing his unique party smashing style blending up hip-hop, electro and of course a healthy dose of bass to make you wobble!

Keeping things fresh and making his LE11 debut, man like XXXY joins the party after setting the scene on fire over the last couple of years with his productions and DJ sets alike. This man is solely responsible for some of the best tunes to come out of the underground over the last couple of years. Productions such as 'Know You', 'Blue Flashing Lights' and of course 'Ordinary Things' have ripped up dancefloors up and down the country, so we thought it best we got ourselves a bit of the action. Yet another new genre akin to reggaeton, "Moombahton" although sprouting out of D.C. belongs almost exclusively to the Web (in particular soundcloud).

Thick, spread-out bass lines, dramatic builds and a two step pulse with quick drum fills is what characterizes the sound. Sometimes, there are ravey synthesizers or even acid lines. Occasionally there are acappella rap samples. Mostly it permeates a reggaeton/Latin flavor, with a side order of heavy European influence. But whatever you say it is, it certainly is a new way to bounce.

An offspring of the immense 'culture-hopping' taste that music so often brings to the table, 'Moombahton' distinctly has alot of airmiles, taking influence from all over the globe. And that's what makes it so refreshing. Even though tempos are way down to 100bpm sometimes the energy is still there.

So our main man Pasquale has dipped his toes into the Moombah waters and come out of the pool with a fresh new mix to try and teach you Loughborough kids what it's all about. Get ready for something different with an altogether global flavour!

Kissy Sell Out is a British DJ/remixer/producer who established himself quickly in England's underground dance scene, mostly for his remixes, many of which are Internet-circulated bootleg mash-ups of popular songs. Born Thomas Bisdee and originating from Essex, Kissy Sell Out began his prolific remix and production output in 2006. The San City High label released a few of his own productions, including "Her" and "Permanent Record," but for the most part, he concentrated on remixes, including a few for the Fat Fox label. This early work, as well as his DJ performances attracted major-label interest, and in 2007 he was commissioned to remix tracks by All Saints, Gwen Stefani, Mark Ronson, Dragonette, Groove Armada, and Sugababes. Also in 2007 he signed to Lavolta Records, which released the "Her" single, and he saw Hooj Choons release a limited-edition 12" of his Human League remix, "The Things That Dreams Are Made Of." His profile continued to grow in 2008, thanks in part to increasing demand for his DJ performances and his continuing output as a remixer/producer. Now with a Radio 1 show Kissy has played his way into superstardom and his relentless rise only continues to grow. DJ Woody is one of the craziest turntablists in the UK right now! He initially made his name through the dj competition circuit when in 2001 when he was the first European DJ to win the International Turntablist Federation World championship title in San Francisco, a year later he won the Vestax World title. He is known in the turntablist world for his innovative and musical approach and is responsible for the invention of various scratches and turntablist techniques including his famous signature Woodpecker Scratch. His latest shows pit him up with a revolutionary visual screen which syncs up to his manic djing. Bound to be a feast for the ears and the eyes, see what Woody can do in this mental video below!!! Echos is about to get murked!!!

Getting his first set at dbe last month, Wolverine treads a similar line to our other resident Mases, throwing together heavy tracks in a no holds barred fashion. A fan though of lesser known records, he's always championing the new unsigned artists and has a nose for a new record. He got loads of new fans at our last event with people outside falling in love with his mixing. So of course we got him back again to start the heaviness once more. Get to know this local lad as he's sure to smash the place up!

Lucas Starnes aka LSDJ is a new name to the dbe lineup but will no doubt smash it up as we've heard some good things from his camp. Where better to start than our first MAJOR HEADLINER? DJ Plastician is already a well tested party starter having smashed our final Dub-Boro party last year. We got him back purely for this reason and the fact that the man knows his bass music. For those who are not clued up, apart from starting out djing grime and dubstep back in the early days of the sound on pirate radio and repping his own record label, Plastician was releasing bare records under his previous moniker Plasticman. Along with a name change to the relief of Richie Hawtin, Plastician continued to blaze a trail championing dubstep and grime to this very day and has always been a major player in the scene mainly due to his expert djing. Able to blend the deepest dubstep record into a grime banger, similar to previous guest Oneman, Plastician is bound to bring the vibes back to Loughborough. And if you need more convincing here's two heavy mixes to assault your ears. One from KEXP radio which is a straight up dubstep rave and the other for the Mishka mix series which dips between styles and is mixed expertly. We can't wait for him to smash Rain to bits!

The second of our big names to grace Rain nightclub are the 4-man supergroup production unit C.R.S.T! We are well syked to have these guys coming to our fair town as they are literally on the cusp of stardom! Only over a year old they have amassed dozens of releases on labels such as No Hats No Hoods, Ten Thousand Yen, Well Rounded and more recently Herve's label Cheap Thrills. All smashing releases, the guys have created an updated sound of Garage which is totally addictive aswell as super hype. Although they are not just a cheap imitation of the 90s garage sound. Take their track 'Cervantis Riddim'. Starting off with what seems like a seems like a standard garage break, the track takes a Colonel Abrams sample and twists it from its original disco roots into an early night 2step workout. Better yet midway through, the track switches from sinuous drums to a 4/4 house arrangement. Chords reveal a new dimension coming across like Joy Orbison playing Groove Chronicals.

Bringing a versatile flavour of sound, there are no limits to what you may hear!

In contrast to Rugged Soundsystem (that's what we do) local acoustic legend Chrissy Wallis will be making all the ladies swoon with his silky voice and guitar steez. Songs like 'Secret Truth' and 'You Keep' bring to mind Neil Young but Chrissy brings it right up to date with his overall performance and great production. LOGIC DESIGN

New Loughborough fourpiece The Logic Design will be bringing a more indie vibe to the proceedings. After a few gigs around Loughborough including a rambunctious crowd-surfing one at Echos the boys will be hoping to recreate a similar vibe at Orange Tree! Have a listen to some songs below for a taster. 'Lions' jangles along nicely and towards the end breaks into a Bombay Bicycle Club type bridge, which is who the lead vocalist sounds like coincidently, and 'Morning Tide' features lovely guitars and brings to mind London band 'Dogs'.

Local legends Playhouse are not new to the game. Formally known as Penfold Gate the fourpiece have literally serenaded their fair old town for years now with touching private anthems between followers and have garnered attention from Channel 4 aswell as Radio 1. Not ones to sit still though they switched from Folk-affected merriment to a more harmonic and synth based sound. 'Wait for It' features pounding drums and subtle synth work all staples of their new anthemic sound. 'Asteroids' on the other hand seems like a fond farewell salute to their old sound as the track fizzles into space and onto another planet. In a fair world these songs would rock stadiums and make Vinnie Jones cry.

Skilled Sailor, Heavy Drinker & Endless Style. Three of the things that were used to describe Sleazy back in his hey-day. Now a washed up version of his former self Sleazy is currently on the comeback trail playing gigs across his adopted country Britain. With a style that never went out of fashion he his making girls and boys dance sexily and smoothly to his waves of good time music. Catch him sailing through classic records with a Balearic twist as well as plenty of boogie, disco & funk in Bite-Size Portions. Watch out ladies!

Our boys Tru:Tek have got a new release lined up on the new imprint Flexout Audio. Following on from their fantastic Lo Dubs record 'Lionheart' reveals a more roots-based sound combining pure dub aesthetic with a stripped down, subtle and emotional vocal performance from Fermi. Ominous yet triumphant trumpets sound throughout the track and Spectrasoul-type bells ring between Tru:Tek's restrained percussion work. It's another trump card in the boys growing and unpredictable deck!

First of all thankyou so much to everyone who came down to the last dbe with the main man SHY FX last Thursday. It was truly a night to remember and Fusion was totally rammed all night! If it was your first time at dbe then where have you been all this time! Keep your eyes and ears peeled for our next event coming soon!

Secondly we have two upcoming local events we'd like to share with you. First up this Thursday at Rain Nightclub comes new regular Dubstep and Drum & Bass venture DUB N BASS. The drinks are cheap and upstairs will be playing DUBSTEP, DRUM & BASS plus anything with a banging bassline. Our lads Pasquale and Wolverine will be representing dbe on the night and also Jake Twell will be providing a versatile set aswell as residents. Downstairs will be a more chilled out area spinning house and classic tunes coming from Lukan, Greg Hale and others, if you need a breather. Watch out for their 'You Say We Play' segments where you request what you want to hear for 30 mins and 'Skank Off' competition! Pre tickets are £3.50 and on the door are £4.00. It's sure to be an 'IN YOUR FACE' night as their motto says.

They range from simple tweaks like Ital Tek's trustworthy progressive remix, hands in the air house from D'eon, funky interpolations and syncopated drums from new boy Arrow!!!, deep drum based stuff from Greymatter, laid back trip hop vibes from his female collaborator Isola Dusk and even an 808 juke inspired take by Throwing Snow himself. Voices of Reason: The immersion of vocals in today's bass continuum

After what seems like a never-ending and ever-changing debate on micro-genres, a new musical plateau seems to be developing in the UK. One which is allowing vast integration and experimentation. It's vocabulary not just stuck to tried and tested 4/4 beats and bass. The moods are tense and the atmospheres seem to rise up to space, often sounding spectral and haunted. But this time there is a difference, the focal point of vocals.

More than ever before, artists are using and experimenting with their own voice in experimental music. With the rise of The XX and other critically acclaimed 'bands', the once submerged scene (which almost was completely unheard of back when dubstep first came out the doldrums) is now becoming more and more frequent. It's successes clear in the huge number of people coming home from a hazy club and jamming out to now 'temporary modern anthems' (a term i coined to highlight the alarming and frequent brevity of love for a record).

For a start, James Blake, much talked about, often much-maligned, but definitely permeating the vocal aesthetic. Once a purely experimental dubstep producer, affiliated with Hessle and Hemlock known for their forward thinking approach, the young producer then turned to what seemed like an R&B approach, sampling Aaliyah, Kelis and more along with his own warped vocals. Now though it seems he has taken another U-turn. His debut album full of those experimental productions he was once purely known for, along with warped gospel synths, but more surprisingly his now very bare and stripped down vocals at the fore. His first outputs seemed to have helped him make this sudden change with relative ease, the freedom of working under luminaries David Kennedy and Jack Dunning seem to have allowed him such an ease in changing his direction. 'Limit To Your Love' might have been a curveball, the original seeming almost too similar and the JB vocal clearly weaker, but the rest of the album is ripe with stripped down vulnerability. James Blake's tender productions almost break apart and then rise together like a hazy come up. His vocals interplay with the instrumentation and often roll along smoothly like a lullaby, but always with a hint of heartbreak.

Jamie Woon too has been making similar moves. Although rather than being a versatile producer, his voice is his main instrument. Older songs like 'Wayfaring Stranger'and 'Spirits' use his looped vocals to create breathtaking layering of sound all from his mouth. Rather than play like a poor man's Beardyman, Jamie Woon oozes pure soul rather than b-boy prowess. His silky voice sounding apart from any smooth instrument. More recently his live shows pit him up with his sampler and guitar, ably crafting acoustic ballads, and up to date his releases 'Night Air' and his appearances on Platform Mag's The Boiler Room show a more layered and structured song-writing approach in his productions. Similarly to The XX, his debut album is sure to be compared to the Mercury award winners, but the strength does not this time lie in the vulnerability of production and performance. His voice this time is powerful, announcing and oozing soul and dare i say it, production and delivery along the lines of Justin Timberlake. But with the increasing openess of the 'scene' incorporating r'n'b idealistics, some might think that the comparison is not entirely a bad one.

On the other end of the spectrum, there is Sampha, Fatima, Olivier Daysoul, Dam-Funk. Two Brits and two Americans. Although all have been received the brightest in the continuum of the UK. Their delivery and performance all add to the stripped down aesthetic of the current beat scene in Britain, and most have been affiliated with at least one big producer in the bass game. Sampha taking his soulful delivery and adding to SBTRKT's garage and breakbeat productions, Fatima working with the up and coming beat collective Eglo records, Olivier Daysoul smashing Hudson Mohawke's intricate and kitch beatscapes and Dam-Funk creating a South-Cal funk resurgence that is currently taking the UK by storm. The way in which these artists perform so freely and with such vibrancy is case in point to my discussion. Producers see these cats having fun and WANT to work with them. It's an opening that DJ's clamber to get involved with and although live it might not be to everyone's taste, the fact that these guys are experimenting is testament to the scene's aesthetic of 'Can't stop, won't stop'.

What sets it apart though is the direction this scene is taking. Comparisons can be made to the independence of the bass continuum but the music is totally different. Often sealed with joy, often permeating sadness and pain, it's versatility and range compels and excites. There truly is something for everyone.

Clever Monkey - Higher Movements

Original dub-boro rudeboy Matt Perrett has been working on yet more new material after his move back down south. After his first official Clever Monkey release 'Symbiosis' was released on Basspunch records a while back now, his follow up 'Higher Movements' is out now on the ever-growing Mutated Sounds imprint.

The EP covers his trademark heavier sound as exemplified in his early sets at the first few dub-boro's. From the relentless 'Bite the Hand That Feeds You' which sounds like Babylon System sparring with Benga, to the heavy grinding sound of 'Population Control', the EP certainly takes no prisoners! Our favourite at dbe though has to be 'The Redistribution'. Taking on a more 2-step production with added glossy synth sparkles, the track certainly brings to mind previous guest SBTRKT, but the whole EP manages a distinct flavour throughout.

Shy FX is without question one of the original pioneers of the Jungle and drum and bass scenes and a true innovator for dance music across the globe. His career has spanned almost 20 years, cementing his name in both underground and mainstream folk-law. The edit has always been a vital part of dance culture and the current state of artists and DJs utilising editing into their mixing and overall act is more than ever before. The current underground ‘Nu-Disco’ movement has gained a huge amount of steam in the past few years, coming from partly house drop-outs and also from funk and disco enthusiasts. The one thing tying them together is the art of the edit. It enables them to put a new spin on older tracks which allows a newer audience to enjoy the sounds from that time. Rather than simply becoming a revival of sounds, the cross-section of tunes picked for editing and chosen for a mix are wide and vast and all this makes an exciting and progressive scene. 2000 & Disco proves that older music can still evolve to this day, years after it has been released. New listeners and DJs can connect with these tracks from their own perspective and if an edit can make a records more relevant to a modern audience then everyone is a winner.

dbe 3's is a new feature where we get a guest to write about 3 of anything they want, be it 'new artist to watch for', 'new label', 'mc', 'singer' or even a curve-ball like 'best takeaway food' or probably more suitable ' best new dj equipment'. But it's not up to us to select the categories. Each guest writer will update you with his/her top 3's in order to get a broader picture of the state of bass in today's ever-changing music scene. Our first 3's is selected by dbe man SK. Take it away...

1) Label to watch in 2011 - PTN Records

Last year the ever prolific and out-there label RAMP started a new sub-label called PTN. Covering a more stripped down basement sound with elements of funky, house and tribal, the label's debut release came from Doc Daneeka, the “Deadly Rhythm” EP. The EP recieved play from Gilles Peterson, Marcus Nasty, Sinden, Kode 9, Brackles, Oneman and Martyn over the resulting months. Following that Hackman, who along with Doc Daneeka, featured in FACT Mag’s top 10 producers to watch for the year, released the "More Than Ever" EP. On the back of an appearance on Fabric's famed "Elevator Music' comp a few months before, Hackman's release started a peaked interest in the label. The two debut EP's undoubtedly had grasped the perfection of utilising rhythm and bass to ultimate measure. The label then released what was to be probably it's most succesfull release yet with the MONSTER that is Breach's "Fatherless" 12". Featured on dbe's TOP 10 of the year, the record, backed with an almost equally devastating Doc Daneeka remix, was played out by almost everyone with an interest in dance music over the 2nd half of the year and still to this day. Following that were debut releases by Brackles & Shortstuff's friend DJ Dom (whom a debut album is on course for PTN in the future), and a euphoric 12" from Deep Teknologi stalwart T. Williams. Next in line is a Adele sampling 12" from Hackman, and the future is most certainly bright and funky for the now year old PTN.

2) New Duo to watch in 2011 - Downliners Sekt.

Hugely dark, broken and emotive music has been hard to come by in the past year, mostly due to the party aesthetics that new producers seem keen to build on (which is not a bad thing, just tiresome sometimes). However, duo Downliners Sekt. have been quietly releasing free EPs and albums on their website over the course of a few years now, and whilst most free albums often get wrongly mislabelled as not good enough to be bought, every single one here deserves to be digested. From the post rock fuzz of debut "Saltire Wave" the duo have always been difficult to really listen to, but one soon realises that sometimes unfriendly rhythms are the most rewarding. The distorted beats and grooves of their records almost swing at 'dubstep' tempo, but they owe more to the post-everything aesthetic of Warp records stalwart Chris Clark. Those who enjoy the lurching, bass heavy side of dubstep may feel at home here but for those who have ever stayed late at a club, along with heavy eyes and epiphany type moments, will understand the broken rhythms and rising chords complement their 'late-night music'. Cinematic programming and both sung and sampled vocals play their part well, but only through subtle usage, often coming through only slightly yet totally overshadowing the dread vibes of the beats and bass. The last two releases "Hello Lonely, Hold The Nation" and "We Make Hits, Not The Public" explored the popular crucifixion of R&B vocals, but here they sound at one with their landscape. They are perfect places to start and both are available for free on their site: www.downliners-sekt.com. Their adaptation of the dark often comes coupled with rays of light, similar indeed too Burial, but whilst comparisons are always surface level, Downliners Sekt. will almost certainly stay pressurised below it.

3) Night to look out for if you are ever up NORTH - Acetate Leeds

Clubs seem less and less tailored for vinyl these days, a sad truth but one that seems to be linked with the dissolvement of production of Technics turntables. Acetate is a night held at the Wire club in Leeds. The night's concept is that of 100% vinyl, spun by familiar and some less-familiar names through a Funktion One soundsystem. No CDs, no laptops. Given the increase in clubs not built for vinyl, it seems like a welcome and great idea. Started by David Kennedy aka the Ramadanman himself, the past three nights featured himself along with Floating Points and others such as Ben UFO, Loefah, Joy Orbison and Appleblim. The ethics of it seems wonderfully brilliant and the joys of hearing an old vinyl is something which is unparamount compared to a rough digital rip.

Leading from the Front: Jamie XX

Its the start of a brand new year, and with it comes a plethora of excited bloggers and radio DJs casting their eyes to the future and pushing their hot tips for 2011. We here at dbe are dedicated to bringing you the freshest produce that bass music has to offer, so much so that we went to the excruciating effort of doing some field research to get a hands on look at who's gonna be leading 2011 from the front.

After witnessing a spell-bindingly wonky and sub flexed set at the Warehouse Project last month we've come to the conclusion that Jamie XX is one of the most exciting things in dance music right now.

Mercury Prize winning drum machinist Jamie XX has already made a solid impression with his epic rework of Florence's You Got the Love, along with an already impressive list of remixes under his belt. But now that he's turning his hand to drum machine and steel pan toting solo production, 2011 looks set to be a massive year for him.

The first finding of our WHP field research is a fresh cut from Jamie's upcoming remix collaboration with Gil Scott-Heron. This project see's Jamie remixing soul and spoken word poetry legend Gil-Scott Heron's entire album, entitled We're New Here. The album is a beautifully humane and intimate reflection of Scott-Heron's troubled life, and the fact that he entrusted the beat-junkie to re-work the entire album indicates its gonna be a carefully curated piece of sonic craftsmanship. The work we've heard so far seems to contrast with Gil Scott's weathered tones and create a hopeful sound-scape which totally flips the emotional output of the originals.

The first sneak preview can be streamed below (and downloaded from www.werenewhere.com) . This track is a true sonic journey through sheer blinding synths, rolling wonkbass, and sensually screwed out vocal samples. Not to mention his lush trademark steel pan flecked outro. Not to be missed:

And possibly the most important finding of our research is, in our opinion, going to be one of THE tunes of 2011. Shrouded in mystery and rumour, Far Nearer is to be Mr XX's debut solo 12" production. We heard this track dropped in the field and all of us hit the roof. This tune is a gorgeous composition of shuffling garage beats, awesome steel pannage, and wicked tweaked vocals. We love it and reckon its going to be huge. But at the moment Numbers records are keeping us hanging, with no definite release date due to "sample copyright issues". Sort it out Numbers!

dbe: Picks of 2010

What a year it's been for us at dbe HQ. As dub-boro closed its doors after a climax of final nights which blew the doors of all of the venues we hosted throughout this fair old town of Loughborough, dbe arose from the ashes as an all-together different beast. Starting with what could only be described as a 'pulsating' opening night with the hottest property in the biz right now, Katy B, along with Breakage, Mistajam and Scratch Perverts, we truly started the second half of '10 with a bang! Following on from that we put on a night for the true music aficionado with a huge list of who's who in the game right now. Toddla T, Redlight, Drop The Lime, Doorly, Untold, Kito & Kastle all blew the roof off an internationally flavoured lineup, proving that it's not just the UK vibes you'll hear at dbe.

Finally what seems like only yesterday was probably our most outrageous lineup yet. We still personally cannot get over the fact Ms Dynamite came to Loughborough, let alone destroyed the place with hit after hit! Priviliged by the fact she graced our lineup would be an understatement but nuff respect to everyone else who held down the night with the vibes to keep everyone dancing till the early hours. Roska and Oneman both bought the London flex to Room 3, showcasing tight new tunes from the best labels and artists right now aswell as some classic garage. Danny Byrd, Mensah & N-Type smashed Room 2 to bits with heavy hitting sounds from Drum n Bass to Dubstep. Room 1 was jammed all night and big shout outs to Jack Beats for coming down once again to rock it. We also have to give the plaudits to our new residents Jacob Plant and Tru:Tek for sticking with us from the beginning of dbe and its been a pleasure seeing them skyrocket in the game, Jacob Plant getting his tunes played on Radio 1 and LIVE by Ms Dynamite, and Tru:Tek getting their first release out on the legendary Lo Dubs label aswell as producing a fantastic mix for us two posts below! Bigger Than Barry and Basslaced also deserve a big hand for holding down 2 of the rooms from the last event, Brum and Notts stand up!

So here at dbe it felt only right to look back on 2010 with a retrospect of what really mattered, the music. Us head honchos have put our collective heads together and scratched out a short-list of our favourite tunes from this year and have tried to form a list that says as much as it says for dbe and our manifesto as it does for electronic music. We hope its not a select-by-numbers kind of list but you never can please everyone so we hope you enjoy it regardless...

10. Mosca - Square One

Mosca's tunes are sonic adventures. I cannot even begin to describe the b-side of this, his first release of the year, and where its starts to where it begins. In fact, it was so difficult picking a Mosca tune for this list because every excursion sounds so different. But, in the end, it came down to the one tune that stood as a statement. Night Slugs first release set a standard for the rest of the label's output throughout the year. Square One squirms thorough different places and environments throughout its length, but its a squirm which navigates through different eons of dance history through its use of samples. It's also a record which for me typifies what has happened this year in music. Tropical drum sounds? Neon synths? No-one really knows what the fuck is going on. But sometimes that's a good thing... right?

9. Magnetic Man - Perfect Stranger ft. Katy B

Magnetic Man blew up in 2010. Everyone knows this. 3 super-prouducers teaming up to create one of this years crossover hit album wasn't the headline though. What was surprising was how enjoyable it actually was. Underneath all the hype their debut album is well produced sure, but their song-writing capabilities shone through superbly. A group that got on the cover of NME from THEIR background deserves to be in whatever Top 10 their is. Hopefully whatever comes from them in the future will stay grounded and true to their roots but for now they deservedly are the poster boys of dubstep. Perfect Stranger edged it for us as Katy B has had a fantastic year too, this being her finest vocal performance.

8. Girl Unit - Wut

This tune got (and is still getting) MULTIPLE REWINDS. The word of mouth about this tune on the internet and clubs building up to its release was chaotic, which led to whenever it got played out, the whole room erupted whoever and wherever you were. A tune that does that to people really affects them and the tune deservedly stuck in heads until its release where it got full recognition. Deeper into it though is its blend of pure hip-hop crunked-out synths, MPC type beats, and pitched-up vocals. This is a hip-hop instrumental! Along with Deadboy, Bad Autopsy and a host of other inspiring djs, Girl Unit helped people break out of their ties with strictly dubstep music and discover a new sound.

7. Joy Orbison - The Shrew Would Have Cushioned The Blow

Beyond the confides of sound lies Joy Orbison. The man responsible for the most anthemic tune of last year came back with but a handful of new tunes in 2010. It's worth taking his time though. Working at a slower speed seems to suit him and after the hype (mngo) died down from last year Joy Orbison's stellar house workout 'The Shrew' stood out as a curveball, yet a welcome one, in his growing arsenal of subtle dance music. Influenced by house 'The Shrew' is the sound of a producer embracing pure emotion in suppressed form. Synths expand and then die down slowly, then come back again in a different format, rising and falling like emotions through a night at the club. Vocal samples seem distant yet close, summoning you in then disseminating beneath the textures of beats and rhythm. It's an old trick the best house producers have perfected over the years, but whilst Joy Orbison seems to have escaped the 'dubstep' tag, chances are he won't be producing either next year if his current output metamorphoses like this.

6. Deadboy - If U Want Me

Like Mosca, Deadboy seemed to typify 2010 in the calibre of dance music output. 'If U Want Me' on level terms is a modern 2-step/garage love song. However, it's THOSE synths that really bring it right up to date. Rising and falling, then exploding nobody perfected that sound like Deadboy. The bursts of vocals throughout the song still harks back to the 90s though and Deadboy is clearly indebted to that time, which is refreshing to see. His upcoming releases are more R'n'B focused, which seems to be 2011's trend, but let's not jump to conclusions yet... 2010 was jam packed with enough trends to build a beaver dam.

5. Skream - Listening To The Records On My Wall

Skream’s second album, Outside The Box, was one of the most eagerly awaited albums of this year. This, the lead single, firmly put into practice his newer more epic sound which covers most of the album. The jungle break throughout once again typifies the different junctions producers were travelling down in order to stand out, but the uprising swells of synth sounds and bleeps signalled a newer more polished sound for the London lad. Producing a solo album aswell as the Magnetic Man group was deemed all too much at the start of the year and many people laughed... only Oliver is laughing now, this year is his.

4. Roska - Wonderful Day Ft. Jamie George

If there was one tune that got us all dancing around our living rooms like lunatics and singing out loud in the car with the windows down this summer, it was this one for sure. Roska was always on our radar and we were so glad to have him smash up the last dbe. 'Wonderful Day' in a perfect world would be top of the charts. Featuring Roska's trademark bubbling production and synth stabs the track rolls on for 6 mins on a wave of good vibes. On top of that Jamie George's casual delivery not only allowed us all to sing it, but allowed singer and producer to work in wonderful synchronicity. JG's lyrics also hark back to the days of being a little kid, and who can resist acting a little childish sometimes...

3. Ramadanman & Midland - Your Words Matter

It's hard to believe what a year David Kennedy aka Ramadanman has had. Always being on the cusp of something different, this year he managed to explode whilst mining a whole new sound palette. Whilst most of his 2010 catalogue delves into dark, emotive 808 sounds, in particular 'Glut' and 'Work Them', our track which we most enjoyed was an all-together more simple jaunt with friend and collaborator Midland. 'Your Words Matter' contains almost none of what most drew us to Ramadanman's bleak, emotive yet hopefull output, yet those vocal cuts and superbly crafted house drop excited us every time. It's again, another example of someone who refuses to be categorised and never stays still. His impeccable attention to detail always demands multiple listens though, and there is plenty more yet to come from our man Rama.

2. Breach - Fatherless

'Fatherless''s unforgettable flute loop and ominous tribal beat together made THE hardest dance track of this year. It's tense build-up ridiculously goes on for nearly two minutes, yet within its first half it strangely keeps you hanging on. It's understated atmosphere at the beginning always threatens to erupt and when those flute trills swarm its a warning to get ready. The beat finally drops and sure enough everyone loses their shit. Clubs erupt to this kind of tune and the kind of reaction it got in 2010 deservedly puts it at No.2 in our list.

1. James Blake - CMYK

James Blake makes music for your heart and your soul. Whether or not you follow him dearly, no one can deny the effect his music has on people. His relationship with R&B/gospel, soul and vocal music is the most charming aspect of his character. And it's his character which really shines through in all of his music. It would be tough to find a track that epitomized the hyped post-dubstep sound more than 'CMYK', but coming from a man like James Blake it only serves to be the genre's most deserving and defining track.
